Kindergarten
Phonics: We will finish learning about the letter N this week and continue reviewing the letters and sounds we have learned so far.
Language Arts: This week, we will enjoy a different fall or Halloween-themed story each day! We will practice recalling story details, comparing and contrasting stories, sequencing events, and identifying nouns.
Math: We will finish Unit 1, Numbers 0–5, and begin Unit 2, Comparing and Ordering Numbers 0–5.
Religion: We will continue to learn about Noah's Ark and discuss the importance of respecting and valuing all life during Respect Life Month.
Social Studies/Science: Plant life cycle of a pumpkins!
A Few Reminders:
1. Halloween Parade and Party
Kindergarten will celebrate Halloween with a parade and classroom party on Friday, October 30th! We are asking each family to send 24 pieces of individually wrapped candy (NO NUTS, PLEASE!) for our schoolwide trick-or-treat parade. Each classroom will help pass out the candy as we make our way around the school.
Please send your candy to school by Wednesday, October 21st.
A SignUpGenius has been sent out for our Halloween celebration. Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered! We appreciate your help in making this a fun and memorable day for our kindergarteners!
2. Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
Our field trip to Applejack's Pumpkin Patch is Tuesday, October 20th! Here are a few important reminders:
Parent drivers: Please arrive at school by 9:00 a.m. so we can leave promptly at 9:10 a.m.
Lunch: Please pack a sack lunch and a drink for your child (no soda, please).
Booster seats: If you are not driving, please send a booster seat clearly labeled with your child's name.
What to wear: Students should wear jeans, spirit wear, tennis shoes, and/or boots.
Return time: We expect to be back at school around 1:30 p.m.

What's Happening in Kindergarten This Week?
Phonics: Our letter for this week and next week is the letter Nn, as in nest! We will also begin learning about syllables and practicing how to clap and count the syllables in words.
Language Arts: We are kicking off some fall and Halloween fun by reading a different seasonal story each day! We will practice recalling story details, comparing and contrasting stories, sequencing events, and identifying nouns.

🎃A Few Reminders...
1. Parent-teacher conferences are next week on Thursday, October 22nd. If you have not signed up for your childs meeting, please do so now2. Our Pumpkin Patch field trip has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, October 20th.
3. Please be sure to check your child's folder every day so you don't miss any important information.
4. Halloween Party & Parade: Kindergarten will celebrate Halloween with a party and parade on Friday, October 30th! More details will be coming soon! Please return the completed slips to school the following day.

🍎What We’re Learning This Week🍎
Phonics:
Our letter this week is the letter Aa, as in apple! We will practice hearing and identifying the short /a/ sound. We will also work on counting the sounds we hear in words, breaking apart compound words, and identifying beginning and ending sounds.
Language Arts:
Our story this week is Everybody Works. Our new sight word is "and." We will practice using text & picture evidence to help us understand and answer questions about a story. We will also learn about declarative sentences.
Math:
We are beginning Unit 1: Numbers 1–5. We will practice recognizing, counting, writing, and representing numbers one through five.
Social Studies/Science:
Community Helpers! We will learn about the important jobs people do to help our community.
Religion:
We will finish our Safe Environment lessons this week.

Applejack’s Pumpkin Patch Field Trip:
I am still missing a few permission slips for our field trip next week.
If you are driving, you will need to purchase your own admission ticket online through Applejack’s Pumpkin Patch. Tickets purchased at the gate will be charged at the full admission price.
Please make sure both the parent and student are listed on the white waiver form. The white waiver must be signed and returned by October 9th.
The yellow permission form must also be signed and returned. This form gives your child permission to attend the field trip.
If you are unable to drive, no worries! We have plenty of parent drivers, and we will make sure your child has a ride.

Language Arts: Our story this week is Monster Party by Joy Cowley. Our sight/heart words this week are do, this, can, and orange. We will be working on identifying number words 0-5. We will be working on finding adjectives in our story, as well as, characters, and the setting.
Math: Unit 16 in our enVision Math this week. We will be analyzing, comparing, and composing shapes!
Religion: This week we will talk about the Feast of the Archangels, the Bible, and finish our Safe Environment.
Just a few reminders:
1. Permission slips were sent home last Friday for the pumpkin patch field trip. Just a reminder that the student tickets are already paid for in your school fees. If you are driving, you are responsible for buying your ticket online with the pumpkin patch. If you wait and buy it at the gate, they will charge you full price. Also, parents and students must be listed on the white waiver form and signed and returned by Oct 9th. The yellow permission form needs to be signed and returned as well. This form gives permission for your child to attend the trip. If you can not drive, no worries. We will have plenty of other parents driving that they can ride with.
2. Several students have been asking about sight word testing. My hope is that students will know list #1 and #2 by the end of the 1st quarter. If they can do more than list #1 & #2, great! Keep practicing! I will check over the next few weeks be testing them on those lists.

Our stories this week are In the Dark, Dark Wood & Johnny Appleseed. Our new sight words are "in" and "up."
Math:
We are finishing Unit 15 with a short assessment and beginning Unit 16. In our new unit, we will work on composing, comparing, and analyzing shapes.
Religion:
This week, we will complete the first part of the Safe Environment Program, which is required by the Diocese. A letter was sent home in each student's folder on Friday explaining the program. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Applejack's Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
I will be sending home a permission form and field trip details this week. Parents who plan to attend will need to purchase their own tickets through a special QR code provided by Applejack's. The QR code will be included with the field trip information.
Please return the signed permission form and waiver to school. ALL students and parents attending the field trip must have a signed waiver in order to attend the pumpkin patch.

Language Arts: Our story this week is Snow White and Red Rose. Our new sight words are red and like. We will also be learning about characters in a story, labeling, and describing words (adjectives).
Math: We have started Chapter 15 in our enVision Math. In this chapter, we will be learning about positional words such as inside, outside, above, below, left, and right.
Religion: We have started our Friendzy unit for September. Our catchphrase for this month is “Ohana: Stick Together.”
Social Studies / Science: We will continue talking about shadows and the Earth's surfaces. We will also start learning about the life cycle of an apple tree.

🍎 This Week in Kindergarten 🍎
Here are a few things we will be working on this week!
Phonics:
Our letter this week is Gg, as in goat. We will be working on:
- Rhyming words
- Vowels vs. consonants
- Compound words
- Identifying capital and lowercase letters
Language Arts:
Our story this week is What Makes a Family?
We will learn the sight word: the.
In your child’s binder, you will find a list of the sight words we would like students to memorize this year. Students only need to be able to read these words—they do not need to know how to spell them.
Each quarter, I will assess students on different sight word lists. During the first quarter, we will focus on Lists 1 & 2. Feel free to work ahead if your child is ready!
We will also learn about:
- Characters in a story
- Nouns that name places
Math:
This week, we will review 2D (flat) shapes and expand our knowledge of 3D (solid) shapes.
Religion:
This week will be our first time attending school Mass! We will spend time learning and practicing expectations for Mass.
We will also continue talking about how we are made in God’s image and that we are all children of God.
Social Studies & Science:
We are beginning to learn about the different surfaces of the Earth. We will also explore how shade affects these surfaces.

ASQ parent questionnaires are due Friday, September 4th. Please remember to complete the assessment on paper first and then enter the information online. I do not need the paper copy returned to school.

3. 🎃 First Field Trip!
Kindergarten will be taking our first field trip to Applejack’s Pumpkin Patch on October 14th! We will be gone approximately 9:15 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

If your child completed the Hallow Challenge this summer, tomorrow is the last day to fill out the Google Form in the Mustang Weekly.

This week we will continue learning about the story of Creation, talk about how we behave during Mass, and begin learning about the Bible.
Social Studies/Science:
We will continue learning about school rules and how we treat our classmates. We will also begin talking about our families!

2. Pickup Name Signs
Please remember to put your child’s name sign on the dashboard during pickup. It really helps us get everyone to the correct cars quickly and safely! Please make sure the sign is propped up so we can easily see it. Feel free to make extra signs at home if needed.
3. Field Trip!
Kindergarten will be going on our first field trip to Applejack’s Pumpkin Patch on October 14th! We will be gone from approximately 9:15 am – 1:30 pm. More information will come home as we get closer.

Hello, Kindergarten parents!
We had a wonderful first full day of Kindergarten! Your little ones worked hard, learned a lot, and had a busy day! You can probably expect them to be REALLY tired by the end of this week. 😊
Here are a few things we’ll be working on this week:
Phonics: Our letter of the week is L! We will also begin learning with our phonics series. Coming home in your child’s folder this week will be a parent note with information about the phonics program, along with sight word flashcards to practice at home.
Language Arts: Our story this week is The Jigaree. We will learn about the different parts of a book (cover page, back page, and spin) and discuss the roles of authors and illustrators. We will also identify characters in a story and practice recognizing rhyming words.
Math: This week, we are becoming familiar with the different math manipulatives we will use throughout the year. We are learning how to use and care for these tools and how they can help us become better mathematicians. Later this week, we will begin our unit on shapes!
Religion: Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about the story of Creation and the many wonderful things God created for us.
Social Studies/Science: We are learning about our school and classroom rules and why they are important. We will also focus on how to be kind, respectful, and caring classmates.
Just a Few Reminders

- Library Books: We had library today, so every student will be coming home with a library book in their backpack. Library books need to be returned every Monday so students can check out a new book. I encourage the children to keep their library book in their backpack. When they are ready to read it, they can take it out and then put it right back in their backpack when they are finished. Hopefully, this will help prevent books from being lost or forgotten on library day!
- Pickup Name Plates: Please remember to place your child’s name plate on the dashboard during pickup. It needs to be tented/folded so that it stands up for us to see it easily. This really helps us get everyone to the correct vehicle quickly and safely. Feel free to make additional signs at home if needed.
- School supplies: If you have not already, please make sure your child has brought a coloring box, blue folder, and scissors to school.
